Edwards Evening News Roundup-Tuesday 5/22 Edition

Tue May 22, 2007 at 07:10:34 PM PDT

Good evening everyone! Hope everyone had a good day today and now sit back and work on having a good night with some wonderful news...Elizabeth Edwards paid us a visit here at Daily Kos tonight. More below the fold

There is absolutely no better way to start off a diary than with a link to Elizabeth Edwards visiting with us at Daily Kos. She tells us that John will be joining all the lucky ones that will be attending Yearly Kos in Chicago. I won't be able to make it but I look so forward to much live blogging from our Edwards supporters. Here is the link to Elizabeth's dairy.

I have spent the last day working on a video. I've had some problems but did manage to finally get it posted. The quality is not what I would have hoped for (it's a long story for another time) but the message and the music are still in there. I hope you enjoy it.

I think we all know in our hearts that John Edwards truely cares about those living in poverty and will do what he can to put and end to it. Some like throw his success up in his face and cannot believe that a man as successful as John Edwards can still be so caring. I have one thing to say to that...

For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required." -- Luke 12:48

I'm not throwing this in here to just throw around Bible verses. I am a Christian so this means a lot to me but I think even those that are not of any particular faith can agree, when life has been good to you..you give back. John Edwards is giving back in spades.

Edwards on the Iraq funding bill

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement today about the latest congressional developments on a bill to fund the war in Iraq.

"Conceding to the president on full funding for the Iraq war is a serious mistake. It is time to force an end to this war, and the only way for Congress to do that is to use its funding power. Any compromise that funds the war through the end of the fiscal year isn't a compromise at all, it's a capitulation. As I have said repeatedly, Congress should send the president the same bill he vetoed again and again until he realizes he has no choice but to start bringing our troops home."

Edwards statement on the China currency manipulation

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – As Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi meet today, Senator John Edwards issued the following statement calling for strong action against China for illegal currency manipulation:

"The Bush Administration should stop sitting on its hands and actually do something to save American jobs. We have known for years that China is manipulating its currency to boost its trade advantage with the United States, and working families are suffering.

"Because China is a member of the World Trade Organization, we have tools to use to hold China accountable for its currency manipulation. Once again, I call on President Bush to use his authority and end this unfair Chinese advantage. Simply pointing fingers at China cannot substitute for getting our own economy in order, but neither can we allow China to continue policies which harm American workers and the entire global trading system."

Edwards still has strong lead  in Iowa

Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat John Edwards are atop a poll of likely Iowa caucus voters because both presidential candidates have invested so much time organizing and visiting the state, activists in both parties said Monday.

Romney was backed by 30 percent, ahead of Arizona Sen. John McCain with 18 percent and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani with 17 percent, according to the poll in the Des Moines Sunday Register.

Among the Democrats, Edwards was ahead with 29 percent of those surveyed, compared to 23 percent for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and 21 percent for New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to the poll, which was conducted May 12-16.

Veteran Democratic strategist Ron Parker had a similar impression of Edwards' early poll success. He noted that the strong backing for Edwards might be surprising to some who assumed the heavy attention being given to Clinton and Obama would vault them into the lead.

"I think there were folks out there who assumed the buzz was enough to create a front-runner," said Parker. "I think you have to get back to the grassroots and this shows you can't win the Iowa caucuses on name ID and buzz alone."

The Register's poll was conducted by Des Moines-based Selzer & Co., based on telephone interviews with 400 voters who said they likely would attend Democratic caucuses and 401 voters who said they likely would attend Republican caucuses. The poll claimed a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.

Edwards gains support in New Jersey

Summit, New Jersey – As Senator John Edwards visits New Jersey today to tour a stem cell research facility with former New Jersey governor and New Jersey state Senate President Richard Codey, he received the support of several prominent New Jersey leaders.

"John Edwards is the best chance Democrats have to win the White House and make a real difference in the lives of America's families," said Assemblymember John McKeon. "John Edwards has detailed plans to build a better America -- plans to guarantee universal health care, end poverty in America, fight global warming and end the war in Iraq. I am proud to support his candidacy and work with him to improve the lives of all Americans."

Codey endorsed Edwards in February saying, "John Edwards has the leadership qualities and the experience to lead this nation. John Edwards also has the best vision to put a Democrat back in the White House."

Ok, that's a wrap. It was short and sweet tonight. I had much going on here at home at the last minute but I hope I was able to hit the high points.

Have a good night everyone!
